Winter Reading 2024: four great books to dive into

As the days grow colder and shorter, and with more time spent indoors, I like this introspective time of year using books as a way to reflect and recharge. Here are my winter reading recommendations 2024; four great books you may want to dive into.

Winter Reading 2024 Reading Book #1

That Will Never Work: The Birth of Netflix and the Amazing Life of an Idea by Marc Randolph

In 2000, Netflix co-founders Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph approached Blockbuster with a proposal to sell their company for $50 million. Blockbuster executives rejected this offer. This book shares Netflix’s journey through the early years and beyond, including what happened at the now-infamous Blockbuster meeting—a must-read for all business owners and entrepreneurs.

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

The incredible untold story of how Netflix went from concept to company-all revealed by co-founder and first CEO Marc Randolph. Marc Randolph’s transformational journey exemplifies how anyone with grit, gut instincts, and determination can change the world—even with an idea many think will never work. That Will Never Work is the ultimate follow-your-dreams parable and one of the most dramatic and insightful entrepreneurial stories of our time.

Winter 2024 Reading Book #2

Sell like crazy by Sabri Suby

This isn’t a ‘new book’ for me, as I tend to dip in and out of it when needed, but I revisited it recently, and it didn’t disappoint. It is full of actionable digital marketing concepts and strategies to help you master this digital era, complete with detailed step-by-step formulas.

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

“Sell Like Crazy,” by Sabri Suby, promises to be your secret weapon for skyrocketing business growth. Suby, founder of Australia’s fastest-growing digital marketing agency, reveals the exact strategies he’s used to generate over $400 million in sales across 167 industries. This isn’t just another marketing book filled with generic advice; it’s a battle-tested blueprint packed with actionable tactics to rapidly grow your sales and dominate your competition.

Winter 2024 Reading Book #3

Play Nice But Win by Michael Dell

This book is a real eye-opener and reality check of what it took for Dell to win: the pain, struggles, effort, and hard work to succeed. Even though you know it comes good in the end, you’re rooting for him all through.

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Play Nice But Win is a riveting account of the three battles waged for Dell Technologies: one to launch it, one to keep it, and one to transform it. For the first time, Dell reveals the highs and lows of the company’s evolution amidst a rapidly changing industry and his own as he matured into the CEO it needed. Play Nice But Win is a survival story proving that while anyone with technological insight and entrepreneurial zeal might build something great, it takes a leader to build something that lasts.

Winter 2024 Reading Book #4

Building a Storybrand by Donald Millar

This is another firm favourite that always centres me with the key message, ‘Your customer should be the hero of the story, not your brand.’ It is full of practical tips to help you connect with your customers and promote your story. Read this book if you ever feel you’re not connecting or communicating with your customers.

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Donald Miller’s StoryBrand process is a proven solution to business leaders’ struggles when discussing their businesses. This revolutionary method for connecting with customers gives readers the ultimate competitive advantage, revealing the secret for helping their customers understand the compelling benefits of using their products, ideas, or services.
